SCERT Conducts Dry Run Before FLN Survey

SRINAGAR- A four-day orientation program comprising a dry run for a country wide survey of foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) among the children of Grade-3 to be conducted by the National Council of Education and Training (NCERT) on 23-25 March concluded at the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) here today.

The event was organized by the Educational Research Survey and Assessment (ERSA) Wing of the SCERT. A team of observers sent by the Ministry of Education (MoE) toured some districts to oversee the dry run.

After conducting the dry run at various select schools in all the 10 districts of the valley, the field investigators (FI) and district coordinators (DC) appointed for the survey submitted the documents with the ERSA officials.

Academic Officer, G H Reshi, who is also the coordinator for FLN, NAS, recorded the feedback from the FIs and DCs while replying to their queries on the survey.

The survey, he said, will help understand the learning levels of students up to the Grade 3 in order to design the interventional strategies for them.

According to the Ministry of Education sources, the FLN is the first of its kind in the world that aims to set up benchmarks for reading with comprehension in Indian languages.

Giving details of the event, Dr Nazneen Me’raj, Senior Academic Officer and HOD ERSA Wing, said the fundamental aim of the study is to facilitate an understanding of learning up to grade 3 to design the intervention strategies.

“Foundational Literacy and Numeracy is targeted at ensuring all children in foundational years achieve basic minimum proficiency in literacy and numeracy,” she said.

Meanwhile, Secretary Department of School Education & Literacy, MoE, Ms Anita Karwal, in an online review meeting sought a report on the status of State Curriculum Framework (SCF), mobile survey app and FLN Survey in the States/UTs.

Director SCERT, J&K, Prof Veena Pandita, State Project Director, Samagra Shiksha, Deep Raj Kanethia and other officials from the ministry participated in the meeting.
